WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT OUR FLEXLITE SURFBOARDS
Know that custom expanded poly styrene, or EPS, surfboards are frickin'
revolutionary. Seriously. This new technology has always been out there
and proven worthy by Randy French's Surftech Tuflites, but when Clark Foam
shut down in December, every man, woman and child out there with an
inkling of foam blowing experience embarked on one serious R&D
campaign in foam science. The result has been a flood of incredible and
not so incredible product. Out of the incredible batches, Rusty has
stumbled upon blanks that can be shaped the same (both by hand and
machine) as the traditional polyurethane blanks by Clark and glassed with
epoxy. The ending result is a production process that is nearly identical
to that of traditional blanks, yet one that yields a lighter, tougher,
more lively alternative custom shape.
WHAT IS EPS TECHNOLOGY?
EPS is usually open-celled foam which means that it resembles a
Styrofoam drinking cup. This means that a blank is literally made up of
billions of little beads that are pre-expanded to a particular size, then
compressed and fused by steam into block or shape at a specific density.
Open-celled refers to the fact that there is space between each bead and,
in the past, that has been a big downer for surfers because as soon as a
an EPS board was dinged, the foam soaked up water double quick. But now
EPS can be engineered to densities similar to polyurethane foam, yet much
stronger, and fused to be virtually waterproof.
WHY SHOULD YOU HAVE A CUSTOM EPS IN YOUR QUIVER?
You should have a custom EPS because it allows you to experiment with
your standard dimensions and surfing style. Because EPS and epoxy's
buoyancy levels are different from polyurethane and polyester resin, you
can order your EPS a little shorter, thinner and with modified rail
characteristics. Plus, the board is light (about three pounds) and quick
and alive.
Since our new EPS blanks can be custom shaped, you can add different
touches to each new one you get.
